Living With Wildlife
In Washington, even the state’s urban hubs are just a short drive from mountains, woods, and wilderness. And with that wilderness comes wildlife, in residents’ backyards, crossing roads, and sharing trails.
Understanding these animals is key to reducing human/wildlife conflicts. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife offers a wide range of information designed to minimize conflicts between humans and wildlife, as well as attracting beneficial wildlife and helping residents better understand the animals in their backyards. Click on below links to view Washington Department of Fish & Game information on living with wildlife.

- Negligent Feeding (Unsecured Trash): If a person fails to take reasonable actions to secure waste after being issued a written notice, they can be fined $87 per infraction.
- Intentional Feeding: Intentionally baiting or leaving food scraps out to attract large carnivores carries much steeper penalties, including criminal charges and fines of up to $1,025.
- Definition of Secure Storage: Under RCW 77.08.010, keeping food waste in an enclosed garbage receptacle or building exempts a resident from “attracting” wildlife, unless a Fish and Wildlife officer explicitly directs them to secure it in an alternative, more rigorous manner.
